Some people like pets but some go overboard. If you buy an exotic animal for a pet, it is not exactly going to be content with a small bowl of dried kibble. It is going to want fresh meat and large quantities, at that! If you are going to care for a wild animal, you are going to have to feed it like one! This obsession creates an interesting thought as to why people do these things. Is there a mysterious connection between mankind and the Big Cats that has been hidden for years? If so, can it help save us from our destructive path that we are on? In talking with the Big Cats, they will give us insights into “Who’s Rescuing Whom” and the importance of this information at such a critical time that we find ourselves facing. On this segment of The Organic View, Laura Lassiter, from Big Cat Rescue will talk about this very relationship. Don’t you just love big cats? They look so soft and cuddly, they make you just want to take one home with you! Well, that is not the smartest idea as many people have discovered because these creatures are, in fact, wild animals. They need a proper habitat and also need the freedom to do as nature intended. However, there are many people that feel they know everything and will buy these creatures only to dump them in a public park when they get to be too much to handle. Some will even “drop them off” to what appears to be a private wildlife sanctuary only to have the animals caged and even sold for their hides and parts used for pet food. The zoos are no solution because once the cubs are no longer babies, they are not deemed valuable because the public only wants to see babies. So, what exactly happens to these creatures when they get big? There is very little legal protection for these animals. However, there is one organization that has been fighting to change the laws to help protect the animals and also to help protect people from having access to these animals! Did you know that there are more tigers in backyard cages in the U.S. than tigers that are left in the wild? In the U.S., there are more incidents of killings, maulings and escapes by big cats than the rest of the world! This is interesting because Americans only account for 4% of the global population. In this segment of The Organic View, Carole Baskin, Founder and CEO of Big Cat Rescue (http://www.bigcatrescue.org), will my guest to talk about the exploitation of these animals in America. Big Cat Rescue, is the world's largest accredited sanctuary that is devoted entirely to exotic cats, such as lions, tigers, leopards and bobcats. Alex was born and grew up in one of the oldest and most historic cities in the country (Quincy, MA). Alex first had his own encounter with the unknown at the young age of 12. He has been interested and trying to learn more about and search for Cryptids ever since. Alone, hiking out of the White Mountains of New Hampshire on a cold winter day in 1973, Alex had an encounter that changed his life forever. What happened is a story he will never forget and has told many times over the airwaves and in print (Phoenix Magazine, Oct 2009). Somewhere between towns of Lincoln and Pittsburg with 3 small dogs in tow, Alex was followed for over two hours by something that stayed just out of view but within earshot of heavy footfalls and branches being snapped. For a distance of over 2 miles Alex played cat and mouse with something that seemed both intelligent and curious. Alex moved to Arizona in 2004 where he continued his interest in paranormal activities and soon founded the Arizona Cryptozoological Research Organization. Originally a small group of researchers based primarily in Arizona, the AZCRO now has members from not only the United States, but beyond as well. Alex has been called Arizona’s leading cryptozoologist (Shanna Hogan, Times Publications). Alex and the AZCRO Team have searched throughout the Southwest for giant bats, giant birds, wild cats and other more mysterious creatures such as Bigfoot, El Chupacabras and the Onza.
